Health Care Reform

Current Events 3/26/2010

Article One

Robert Gates, Defense Secretary, announced today that the Pentagon will start easing up on the enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. This policy prohibits homosexuals from openly serving in the military. The change will take into effect in 30 days. President Obama supports a repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" which was enforced in 1993.

Article Two

Governor Chet Culver signed a bill into legislation this week regarding hospitals informing police when a mentally unstable individual is released. This bill was sparked by Mark Becker who was release the day before he shot Aplington-Parkersburg head football coach. Ed Thomas was shot last June by Becker. Becker was convicted of first degree murder earlier this month. Thomas' family attended the ceremony where Culver signed the bill into effect. The family was the ones who pushed for the publication of this law.

Article Three

Iowa drivers will soon be prohibited from writing, sending or reading text messages while driving. However law officers can not use that as a primary reason to make a traffic stop. This was added through compromise legislation worked through on Thursday. This new bill outlaws texting while driving for most motorists and bans all cell phone useage by beginning drivers.

Current Events 3/52010

Article One

The LAPD have removed the clothing worn by Robert F. Kennedy from their homicide display. The display contained his tie, shirt and jacket which the senator wore when slain. His son, Maxwell Taylor Kennedy, commented on how he believed it was a stunt. The LAPD have apologized to the family claiming they did not intend to offend anyone.

Article Two

On monday the Iowa Senate voted unanimously to close a loophole in the state’s public indecent exposure law. The loophole allowed underage nude dancing in certain venues. The law now established that a person would be considered to have committed a serious misdemeanor for permitting public indecent exposure in a theater, concert hall, art center, museum or similar establishment which is primarily associated with the arts if he or she allows a minor to engage in a live act that was intended to arouse or satisfy sexual desires. The measure is now sent for consideration to the House.

Article Three

The House Transportation Committee approved a measure 20-1, placeing a limited ban on motorists using their cell phones to send text messages while driving. The measure is sent to the full House for voting. If it becomes law, it would be delayed enforcement for a year. During the year it would require officers to only hand out warnings to citizens texting while driving. Violators would be fined a minimum of $65 once the law became into effect.
