Sarah Palin, former vice presidential candidate, has joined the national battle over Arizona's controversial new immigration law. The new law mandates that immigrants in Arizona to carry their registration documents at all times. It also allows police to question individuals' immigration status in the process of enforcing a different law/ordinance. Sarah Palin appeared with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Saturday to speak about the new law.
Article Two
Congress is being asked by Obama administration to approve $205 million to help Israel build a new short-range rocket. This would be in addition to the $3 billion the United States spends every year to help promote Israel's defense. The Obama administration is trying to help Israel enhance its security systems. The president says we need to stay committed to helping out our ally, Isreal, protect their country.
Article Three
The issue has now come up questioning Supreme Court nominee, Elena Kagan, about her sexuality. Some say that sexuality should be a nonissue in the work field, saying that her sexuality is not involved or a need of issue as a Supreme Court Justice. Others are concerned that her sexuality could sway her to vote a certain way on a specific issue. But a million other things could also sway her votes on issues.

Article One
In Buffalo, New York a billboard sign was put up with the following: Dear Mr. President. I need a freaking job. The billboard was put up just before Obama's town meeting on Thursday. The billboard was created by a business owner who lost his textile company. It has sparked a movement to call attention to the unemployment in America.
Article Two
South Carolina Governor spent the past weekend trying to rekindle his relationship with his former mistress. The tall brunette lives in Argentina. News broke last summer about his afffair. He called his mistress his "soulmate". In February, a judge granted a divorce to Sanford's wife, Jenny.
Article Three
Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan will likely take the heat for her opinions on gays in the military and her judicial experience or lack there of. Top Republicans have pointed out that Kagan has not served as a federal judge. Unlike the nine justices serving now. She also feels that it is morally wrong to withhold someone from the military because of their gayness.

Article One
On Thursday legislators compromised the new texting and driving bill. Iowa drivers will be prohibited from writing, sending or reading text messages, but it can not be the primary reason for law officers to make a traffic stop. In the compromise there are texting exemptions for drivers engaged in public safety duties, a health care professional in the course of an emergency situation and a driver receiving safety-related information such as emergency, traffic or weather alerts. The texting ban does not apply to GPSs.
Article Two
Former Iowa Governor will make it official on Monday afternoon about his run for re-election. For two months Branstad has been traveling around the state on his "Iowa comeback tour". He will be facing Bob Vander Plaats and State Representative Rod Roberts in a June 8th Republican primary.

Former Gov. Terry Branstad says he will be joining in three campaign debates with his two Republican rivals. These will occur before the June 8th primary. The two debates that are finalized will be April 7 in Sioux City and on May 1 debate in Cedar Rapids.

Several Iowa sheriffs are expressing their anger towards legislation passed this past week that strips their discretion to issue permits to carry weapons. The legislation was passed on Monday. It requires sheriffs to give a reason if they deny a permit, and make these decisions based on the state guidelines. Sheriff Warren Wethington is a supporter of the bill. He says "it makes the law uniform across the state and puts Iowa on the same plane as three dozen other states."

Gov. Chet Culver was delighted in the Democratically controlled Legislature for not starting the process to amend the state constitution. The ammendment were to declare that civil marriage can only legally enjoin one man and one woman in the state of Iowa. Culver personally believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Culver does not want to see such an ammendment be added to the state constitution.

The Iowa House adjourned at 12:21 p.m. on the 79th day. It was planned to be an 80-day session. The Senate is expected to follow shortly. The House had made some key accomplishments.

Robert Gates, Defense Secretary, announced today that the Pentagon will start easing up on the enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. This policy prohibits homosexuals from openly serving in the military. The change will take into effect in 30 days. President Obama supports a repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" which was enforced in 1993.

Governor Chet Culver signed a bill into legislation this week regarding hospitals informing police when a mentally unstable individual is released. This bill was sparked by Mark Becker who was release the day before he shot Aplington-Parkersburg head football coach. Ed Thomas was shot last June by Becker. Becker was convicted of first degree murder earlier this month. Thomas' family attended the ceremony where Culver signed the bill into effect. The family was the ones who pushed for the publication of this law.
